The Right Golf Trolley for You:

The golf trolley is a device that allows a recreational golfer to wheel a golf bag around the course without have to carry the bag on your shoulders. Although some may benefit from the extra strain and exercise, others will suffer not only with poor scores on the course, but unecessary injuries and aggravation. For years, many golfers have pulled around heavy steel framed basic trolleys around the course. In recent years, advancement in technology and materials have brought about light-weight push trolleys using aluminum and other lightweight materials.

However, the saving grace to many players game is the electric trolley. Many older players have found years more golf thanks to the ability to electronically transport their clubs round by their sides. The electric cart is a strong, easily operated alternative to carrying your bag.

When considering an electric trolley you should look into the battery power, as the trolley can be very heavy to push if the battery runs out at the furthest point from the clubhouse! Check how long does the battery last on a single charge, what its lifespan is and how quickly can it be re-charged.

The price of an electric trolley can be more expensive than a manual trolley, but in the long run it will be a good investment for your body and golf scores. It is a great idea for an older player or a lady player who struggles to carry or even push a bag round, the electric trolley can allow them to concentrate on their game and not their backs.

Types of Trolleys

1. Manual Push/Pull Golf Trolleys
The lighter and less expensive alternative to the electric trolley is the push or pull trolley. Your normal golf bag will fit easily onto the front of the trolley. A 2 wheel manual trolley is designed to be pulled behind you whereas the more stable 3 wheel trolley can be pulled or pushed. When considering a trolley you should look for a strong, but lightweight construction. You want it to be hardwearing yet light enough to lift in and out of your car or locker. Check how it folds away as some also come with wheels that can be removed for easier storage.
2. Remote Controlled Golf Trolleys
These trolleys are controlled with a small remote similar to the size of a garage door opener. These carts are capable of turning left and right and reversing (and of course going forward). When purchasing a remote trolley, you should consider the safety features (i.e. auto stop) and range of the remote. The main advantage of the remote controlled golf trolley is that you do not need to be in constant proximity to your golf cart. When you need your clubs, just simply navigate your cart to you!
3. Electric Trolleys (Non Remote Controlled)
Non-remote controlled electric trolleys are similar to remote controlled trolleys except that they are not remote controlled. These trolleys usually have a simple control system which require you to press a button for powered forward or reverse motion. Most also feature an auto advance feature with which you can instruct the trolley to move forward 10, 20, 30 yards ahead. These trolleys are similar in size to remote trolleys but tend to be less expensive when compared to their remote counterparts due to their less sophisticated control system.

Wheel Types

1. Two Wheel Design
Before the days of three wheeled trolleys, two wheel trolleys ruled the market. Still very stable, the two wheels offer a more manoeuvrable and traditional alternative to either three wheeled trolleys. Two wheel trolleys also tend to still have purely hard rubber tyres that may slightly damage a course. If you play on a flat course though, a two-wheel trolley will use less battery on an electric trolley and can cost a lot less than their three-wheeled associate.
2. Three Wheel Design
Some manual trolleys and nearly all electric trolleys are now sold as three wheelers. They are easy to use and more stable than the older two wheel alternatives. The trolley is grounded by wheels only, unlike the two wheeled ones, meaning you can walk next to it and it travels like all our drives do, straight and true! Three wheel modern trolleys also now include air filled tyres that are very course-friendly.

Materials

1. Aluminium
The great benefit of aluminium is its extremely lightweight construction. The trolley will seem very light and will glide round the course. The only slight drawback is the soft finish of the metal that means it may dent easily. Steel Heavier than the other two options, steel is a strong and solid performing metal on a trolley. Very durable and will feel light if mounted well on stable wheels.
2. Titanium
No golf material section is complete without titanium. As concerns trolleys, the lightweight yet strong nature of the material makes it very suited to carrying clubs. Relatively new to the market, you may have to pay more than you would for steel or aluminium.

Batteries

1. Lead Acid
These types of batteries are heavier but also feature larger capacity to enable your trolley to run more than a couple rounds of golf with a full bag. In addition, Deep Cycle lead acid batteries protect the lead acid battery from degradation when the battery is fully discharged. These batteries have thicker plates that can deliver less peak current, but can withstand frequent discharging. Lead acid batteries that do not have this feature must be constantly maintained with a minimum amount of capacity. Typical lead acid batteries weigh roughly 25lbs (or 12kg).
2. Lithium-Ion
Lithium-Ion batteries are relatively new on the market. They are much lighter and do not suffer for discharge or memory effects that lead acid batteries do. Conversely, lithium ion batteries offer less range when compared with lead acid batteries. In addition, the cost is relatively high when compared to lead acid batteries. However, with these disadvantages, many see the use of lithium ion batteries in electric trolleys as a way of the future. Lithium-ion batteries weigh a mere 3kg.

Questions To Consider Before Buying:

  • How much does it weigh?
You must consider that although it saves you carrying your golf bag; you still have to lug it in and out of your car or a locker room. Also batteries can be quite heavy to push on a trolley if they run out.
  • Can I control the speed?
Not a problem with a push trolley. Some electric models just have a basic on/off function with a pre-set level of power. You may want to consider a progress speed controlled trolley that you can easily control. There are some remote controlled trolleys on the market that will allow you to send the trolley around the green while you walk over it, but at a healthy price!
  • How easy is it to assemble?
Most trolleys are either fold-up or three-piece detachable designs. Either way you should test out how easy it is to assemble and break down. Some trolleys allow the wheels to be removed for easy storage.
  • Will it fit into my car?
Fairly elementary, but you do not want to choose a trolley that will struggle to fit into your car or locker? Most trolleys are designed with the idea that they will be stored in car boots, but it's still something to consider.
  • How easy is it to maintain?
How easy is your trolley to keep clean and in good order. Will you have to dismantle it to keep it clean? How easy is it to charge the battery and how often must it be done? How long will it last? These are all questions that should be considered.
  • Do I like the look of it?
There are so many trolleys available to you that you should be able to find the specifications of one you like in a style and look that is attractive to you. It must be suited to you and your taste. Make sure it is suitable to your height, so that you wont have to bend to operate it as that will do your back more harm that good.
  • How good is the battery?
Without the battery, your electric trolley will not go far. You should investigate to discover the battery life of your trolley and how many holes it should run for. It is also important to find out how long it takes to recharge (this can vary from 2 hours to 10 hours) and decide whether you may need to buy a spare battery. You should test the weight of the battery, they are fairly heavy and need to be lifted out of trolleys, car boots and lockers very often so finding one you can easily carry is important, especially if the trolley is for an older golfer (the best electric trolley will have handles on the battery)
